Kayak.com is the shit for travel sites. Screw sidestep - kayak is so much better.
I love that when you search Norwalk, CT kayak.com is at the top of the review list. Doesn't say much for Norwalk but I guess its tough to compete with the stellarness (NWF) of kayak.
Kayak's layout is easy to follow and you're not overwhelmed with ads and useless graphics. The search functions are quick and easy and you can tweak your search almost endlessly until you get exactly what you're looking for.

Obsessive kayaker at your service. I already spend all my money traveling and all my time thinking about traveling (time when I'm not yelping, that is). Kayak.com only fuels my addiction.
But it's good to see all the other reviews, because now I know I'm not the only travel bug-infected nutcase.
Kayak.com has a simple, clean interface that is easy to use. Creating a free account allows you to save searches and get fare alert emails. They allow so much flexibility with flight searches--departure and arrival dates within a 6-day window, airports within 50 miles, etc. But the best feature is the incredible variety of sites Kayak searches to provide you with the best rates and routes. Kayak searches online travel consolidators such as orbitz and expedia, as well as the airlines themselves.
Kayak is definitely the best travel search engine on the web. They make it easier for me to find a cheap flight to a random international destination that I never thought I'd visit, but because it's cheap, I'll buy a ticket and start packing my bags. Maybe that's a bad thing as far as my credit card is concerned.
I am addicted to travel sites. I will randomly research locations that I don't really have any solid plans to visit. To feed my addiction, Kayak is great because I can search for airfare even though I am not flying anywhere! If you create a free account with them you can save certain searches and get updates on the cost of airfare.
Kayak is great because when you do a search, it searches ALL of the airline's websites, and many of the travel websites like Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz etc.. They advertise that the search flights from 140+ websites. You can also search for hotels, cruises, and rental cars. I like that it searches the travel websites like Expedia, but it also searches the actual airline. I find it to be much more beneficial to use Kayak over a website like Expedia. I currently get like 8 fare alerts and find them to be pretty useful. They have "Buzz", late breaking fares, and neat travel ideas like "Best Nude Beaches" (which links you to the Travel Channel online).
The bottom of the screen also has quick link where you can quickly look at "Boston Flights" or "San Fransisco Flights" or "London Flights" you get the point.
So, add Kayak to my arsenal of travel websites that I love. W00t!

The "google" of travel. For someone who visited 10 countries this year, how did this glorious search engine elude me for so long?
Fortunately someone at work tipped me off to Kayak.com as a good place for searching for plane tickets as I was trying to book a last minute Christmas giveaway.
Their search engine scans all the U.S. and international airlines directly, plus the travel sites like travelocity and priceline, in just a few minutes and presents you with gorgeous results. The interface is simple and easy to use... very google-like.
Reasons why this site is better:
- international flights - most of the "travelocity" type sites only options are for mainstream nearby vacation destinations like Cancun.
- speed and ease of use. I hammered it for a couple hours for several days, and you could literally see fares jumping up and down in front of your eyes. Fares change so fast these days you really need a responsive tool.
I'm kayaking from here on out!

This isn't really a review: I'm chief architect at kayak.com, and I just wanted to say thanks to all the yelpers who posted nice comments.
Feel free to send me direct feedback (via yelp is fine) on anything you like or don't like on Kayak, or suggestions/questions/whatever. We want to be the best travel web site in the world, and the only way we can do it is by listening carefully to our users.
Also, while Kayak HQ is in Norwalk, our engineering team (where I work) is near Boston.

How come all the reviews of this website are from the west coast?
Anyhow, love this site and its ease of use and great deals. Forget all the other travel websites, I check this one first from now on!

Who ever said that dating gets you nowhere (unless you end up marrying that person)? Not true in this case.
I met a girl a while back who was working for a small travel start-up. Kayak.com, she said. What do they do, I asked? Well, it's a travel search engine that looks up all the best ticket prices based on the specific criteria that you put it. I thought that was cool.
Even though the girl did not work out, I got hooked on Kayak, and have no regrets (though I think she still has (or had) one of my West Point baseball caps in her car!)
Kayak is a great search tool - the criteria you can set makes finding a flight very easy. Becoming a member lets you save criteria and past searches so that looking again is easy.
As other folks have said, you don't buy from Kayak, but it directs you to the ticket you've found on their site.
Occasionally I have seen a better price on the actual website you buy from (Orbitz, expedia, etc...) but not usually.
All in all, a handy travel tool. All due to meeting a girl at a bar at a ski slope in Vermont a few years ago who lived near me.

OMG. I just was clued in to the existence of this site this week! What took me so long? (Well, putting off planning vacation travel was part of it.) It's got the most intuitive interface of all the sites I've seen, making it incredibly easy to find the best priced ticket that fits your preferences. Additionally, since they don't do the selling, but rather connect you to the airlines' website for the purchase step, there's no extra fees like you get with travelocity and the like.

Love me some kayak. A lot of my friends swear sidestep is better, I disagree. Kayak is easy to use and not a lot of distracting graphics and ads to throw you off.

Kayak.com is the best travel search-engine site around. Yep. Sooo better than travelzoo, of which I was a supporter for years. the search-result bar at left, that displays the airlines it's scrolling through is totally addictive. Did you hear me? addictive! Kayak is hassle-free; does not make you go through a crazy rigamarole if you want to book a one-way flight, and has the best interface i know.
to watch for: occasionally, the airline's own webiste will have a "web special"; a lower fare than what is listed on Kayak- so its worth double checking your airline's website just in case.

I love Kayak! Using it, we found great (relatively) airfare for a very busy spring week. Thank you for making my Mexican dreams a reality!

Gotta jump on the Kayak band wagon. I've used them for the last two and one up coming international trip. Booking tickets to Kathmandu is not easy, but with Kayak's options, it is certainly easier that TraveloCity. They get cut a star because there was an advertised price of $500 to Managua, Nicaragua in April, but Taca didn't have that as the listed ticket price, not their fault, but still posted on their website. Highly recommend, they search all other travel websites, airline website, between your couch cushions and under your car seat for good ticket prices. I used to comb the web looking for good ticket prices, now I just paddle my kayak to the cheapest ticket. $1600 to Kathmandu in October!!!

Super convenient. Great tool that aggregates and let's consumers know what's happening across many travel sites and airline websites. I used this site for a recent purchase for tickets to Europe.
Much better than checking orbitz, travelocity, travelzoo, etc individually. Thank goodness for kayak.com!!!

Yes! Kayak!
The only thing I don't love is that Southwest doesn't come up on searches, but I'm assuming there's nothing they can do about it. Also, the AJAX stuff is cool, but couldn't they mess with the history using JS, so that when you press the browser back button, you don't lose all the stuff you just did?
Otherwise... rock on, guys.
Okay, I';m biased too as I now work for Kayak. It's a great place to work and the only place I've ever worked where customer opinion and feedback is taken so seriously. We respond to every customer email. And just think, if you come work here, you can work on your Wii Tennis and Wii baseball skills!

Anytime someone is looking for airfare now, I recommend kayak.com. The typical response I get after they try it out is "I love this". The interface is easy to use and allows filtering of flights in useful ways. For example, you can filter out layover airports you don't like and limit the search to such other things as total travel time, departure/arrival times of day, and price with simple sliders. The prices listed are the full price including taxes; the details link for each flight shows the breakdown of fare and fees, useful to see. I still check the airline websites directly, just in case they have a better fare. But, Kayak is where I start.
I only wish there was a way to indicate not to search particular sites for fares. I've sent them feedback.
i am either on yelp or on kayak. downsides are it doesn't have a package deal (flight+hotel) and it takes forever and ever to load its main page. it's ok though...i switch back to yelp and read one review.
